Construction On Campus & the Budget Situation

Q: Why doesn’t the college just stop the construction projects on campus to save programs and jobs?
A: Funding for our construction projects comes out of the capital budget, which is separate and distinct from the college’s state-appropriated operating budget used for daily operating expenses, including salaries. These budgets are not interchangeable. It is SUNY’s operating funds (not capital money) that have been the target of state cuts this year.

In fact, if the college were to stop construction, the funding allocated to New Paltz would be reallocated to another SUNY campus, resulting in these campuses benefiting from this funding and New Paltz losing the opportunity to make many critical enhancements that will improve the quality of our campus life.

Q: Who can I contact for further information?
A: Jacqueline S. DiStefano, Vice President for Finance & Administration, (845) 257-3295, distefj@newpaltz.edu.
